Bruce Wayne (AKA Batman) uses his specially built and gadget-laden vehicle to help fight crime on the fictional streets of Gotham City.
Bruce used the prototype vehicle known as the Tumbler designed by Wayne Enterprises' Applied Sciences Division as a bridging vehicle for the military.
In 'Batman: The Dark Knight Returns' , the Batmobile was modified into a tank-like armoured riot control vehicle, complete with machine guns shooting rubber bullets, a large cannon mounted on the front, and large tank treads in place of tyres. It includes other weaponry and the ability to boost into a rampless jump. The Tumbler's armour is strong enough to break through concrete barriers without sustaining significant damage!
The Event
The first and only replica 'Tumbler' has been built in Western Australia - and the vehicle will be used to spread good deeds and light up the lives of children and adults that have grown up with 'Batman'. The Batmobile will provide a platform raising awareness for children with chronic health problems such as cancer and to fundraise for Madalyn Children’s Foundation which provides financial aid to children who suffer from illness and require medical treatment.
This unique and exciting project is the brainchild of a Perth based visionary, inventor and architect whose world changed in 2012 when his eldest daughter Madalyn was diagnosed with a serious illness. Believing that every day is a gift, this father wants to help other families facing a devastating health diagnoses of their loved ones.
Madalyn Children’s Foundation will travel to various children's hospitals, events and shows across Australia raising awareness and funds for charity. This project will allow this father and his family to share and surround themselves with other good people to bring this dream of creating the Batmobile 'Tumbler' into reality.
The Build
The Batmobile’s design is inspired by the movie Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, in which the Tumbler is conceived as a cross between a Lamborghini and a tank. Its creation is the work of a loyal, tight-knit team led by Mataki and supported by mechanical engineer Anthony Piccoli, whose skills have been critical in turning a plastic toy into a functioning car.
The Curtin University student completed an internship with Mataki as part of his studies and officially joined his business on graduation. Never in his wildest dreams did Anthony think his first job would involve building a replica Batmobile on the side, but together he and Mataki have proven a formidable team.
“I always wanted to understand how things work and I always pulled things apart – just because it could be. “Mat and I push each other all the time. We have a lot of laughs but in the end we both want to do it right.” The pair started by pulling apart a toy Batmobile and drawing up plans for the chassis. From there it’s been a matter of trial and error. A first prototype was made at 60 percent scale with all the welding done in house on weekends. Then work began on a full-size, six meter version.
